The initial orthodontic examination should be done around the age of 7 unless you suspect a problem earlier. Choosing the right time to start a treatment is very important. The examination does not necessarily mean the start of orthodontic treatment. The prevailing perception (even of fellow dentists) is that the parent should wait until all of the child’s permanent teeth have erupted and then visit the orthodontist. Many orthodontic problems can be treated more easily, quickly and more effectively in mixed dentition. After assessing the condition, the orthodontist may recommend simple monitoring of your child every 6 months. Early diagnosis and treatment can help promote favorable tooth eruption and perhaps prevent permanent tooth extraction later.
